The World Senior Tennis Championship
The World Senior Tennis Championship
Organizing Committee has secured the
bid for the 2004 World Senior Tennis Championships for the City of
Philadelphia and environs. The event will be held from September 11- 26,
2004. This marks only the third time in tournament history that the
Championships will be held in the United States, and the first time in the
Middle States section.
The International Tennis Federation has awarded the event to
the
Philadelphia and Germantown Cricket Clubs, coinciding with their 150- year
anniversaries. An estimated 1,500 players from around the world are expected
to travel to the Philadelphia area to compete in the tournament, making it
the largest international tennis event in the world. Philadelphia Cricket
Club member Michael Beautyman is Chairman of the event's Organizing
Committee. Pam Shriver is Honorary Tournament Director.
Men and women ages 55 to over 90 (including many former Davis and Wightman
Cup players) will compete in the two week event, which is comprised of the
International Team Championships and the World Individual Championships. The
first week, September 11 - 18, 2004, will consist of team competition in
which national representatives from participating countries will compete in
five- year age increments. The Individual Championships, also divided into
increments of five years, will take place September 18- 26, 2004. The
Individual Championships are open to anyone, with no need to qualify.
